Guide to Asakusa Main Store

Insect food Japan Insect Cuisine Tokyo Asakusa Main Store Menu Food as insects

Don’t miss out on the incredible experience of eating insects at TAKEO when you’re in Asakusa! You’ll definitely want to come and join us! We offer insect cuisine, an insect café, shopping, and learning about insects—all in one place.

Located a 3-minute walk from Tawaramachi Station G17 on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, we are situated in an elegant neighborhood surrounded by temples. The 60-year-old private house is beautiful with bare beams, creating a relaxed Japanese atmosphere. We have seating for 10, so you can spend your time calmly.

The name of the store’s membership card is “TAKE-NOKO”. The origin of the name “TAKE-NOKO” comes from bamboo shoots. Bamboo spreads its strong rhizomes widely underground and produces new bamboo shoots from there. This name is intended to express the desire to gradually increase these bamboo shoots, which are favored by insect-eating animals.

At the Insect Cuisine TAKEO Asakusa Main Store, you can sample some of our products. Please feel free to visit us.

Customer Testimonials

  • Tarantula

  • I bought a tarantula!
I got interested in eating insects because the British adventurer Ed Stafford looked so good eating them!

It is a valuable source of protein.

  • This …. This taste!

  • I visited the restaurant yesterday just before closing.

Thank you for your kind attention to detail even though it was last minute.
I have been visiting the store from time to time since it was built, and each time I am pleasantly surprised by the stylish interior and the friendly, upbeat staff.

Yesterday was my first try at the store’s limited-edition TAGAME cider.
I have been pondering whether the meat of the TAGAME can be compared to something … . But this morning I finally found an analogy for the taste.
The taste of this TAGAME is … . It’s beef stew (*but the texture was chicken lol), !!!!!
*Taste and texture perception varies from person to person.

    I will stop by again.
Looking forward to the new menu… ♪

  • First Cricket

  • We visited on the evening of 2/4.
I ate crickets for the first time, but only the first bite took courage.
Almost boiled and dried, no discomfort. I was surprised that the TAGAME smelled good.
Cricket ice cream and TAGAME cider were perfect.
We bought dried crickets as souvenirs.
First, we plan to try using them in cooking as a substitute for dried shrimp powder and sakura shrimp.
If we use it for cooking, it will slowly spread, but
I hope TAKEO will continue to develop interesting products.
The restaurant is smaller than expected.
It would be nice to have a space to relax and eat in.
I would also like more menus.

  • Closer Than I Thought

  • I had known about the store for a while but rarely had a chance to visit. Living in Saitama, I hesitated to travel to Ueno just for TAKEO. When I checked the train schedule, however, Omiya to Ueno takes less than 30 minutes—farther in distance, but very close in time.
At the store I tried TAGAME cider and ice cream. The cricket ice cream had a reassuring, familiar flavor. I was surprised by the TAGAME topping on the cider—it is different from the dried TAGAME sold online and truly meaty. I recommend visiting the store if you want to try TAGAME for the first time.
The staff were wonderful. They answered even in-depth questions about future plans with a smile. I will omit the details to avoid spoilers—visit the store if you are curious.

  • I enjoyed it very much.

  • I was interested in entomophagy and visited the store. We were warmly welcomed by the store staff and they kindly told us more about the products, including their taste and texture.
I ate a cricket monaka and enjoyed the crunchiness of the crickets and the slightly shrimp-like aftertaste.
I enjoyed the conversation with the clerk and will continue to support TAKEO.

  • Unexpected Visit

  • I learned a lot. Even though I visited unexpectedly, the staff were very courteous and taught me about their products.
I also tried the cricket monaka, which was delicious with a sesame flavor and no insect smell.

There are a lot of new products like furikake (sprinkles) and cider, and I’m looking forward to checking out more of TAKEO’s products!

  • School Research Project

  • I visited for my child’s school research project.
At first I hesitated at the idea of entomophagy.
I tried the less visually striking fried cricket pasta and was surprised to find it delicious.
The children loved the ice cream monaka and ate the crickets without hesitation.
It will make a great research project this year. Thank you very much.

  • It was a healing space.

  • I had been curious about this mail-order store for some time, and when I learned that a physical store had opened, I decided to visit it anyway.

The restaurant is not large, but it is a simple natural space decorated with unpainted wood and very stylish, without any of the sense of surprise or fear often associated with entomophagy.

The clerk was polite and gently explained everything to me, and it was fun to talk about what I had been secretly thinking about entomophagy in a normal way. It made me think that I would like to try to find a friend.

The store’s limited edition cricket monaka is filled with ice cream and is easy to eat even for first-timers, and it is a dish that will satisfy the hearts of those who go there to eat insects.

I would be happy to have such a stylish entomophagy café in the future. I am supporting it.

  • My First Cricket

  • I had never eaten insects before, but I tried a cricket monaka. Unlike its appearance, it was very tasty. Next time, I thought I would try grasshopper chocolate.

  • Delicious!!!

  • A friend happened to take me to Reptile Cafe Comsa and it was just too cute.
Eventually, I started to crave insect dishes, and I go there every week for fried gecko, alligator meat, insects, and so on.
I’m doing a full marathon, so I wanted to eat bugs more easily because they are a tremendous quality protein amino acid, and I asked for a great collaboration with carbohydrates.
    So cute!!!
    But it’s tiny! (@ ̄□ ̄@;)!
I opened it up and there was a random chunk of chocolate in a Ziploc bag…
I felt it was a little different from what I expected, but it was delicious.
It’s not too sweet—an elegant, precious treat—but it’s a shame to just put it in a Ziploc bag…
There is not much sensation of insects in the food, and after eating it, a crispy substance is left in the mouth.
    I wanted to eat a little more,…
I wish there were at least three of them in there.
It does not feel like insects at all, so people who do not like insects can eat it without any resistance.

  • It was fun.

  • What left the strongest impression was how enjoyable the conversation with the staff was. They told us about easy-to-eat insects, flavor differences by species, game meat, TAKEO products, and many aspects of entomophagy culture—it was fascinating to hear it all in person. I hope to visit again when I have the chance. Thank you very much.

  • I have always been interested in entomophagy culture and have been looking forward to visiting the actual store.
I was able to talk with the staff about entomophagy, which further increased my interest in entomophagy.
I purchased a scorpion and a tarantula this time, but would definitely like to try other insects.
